Donald Matthews speak fondly of the beautifully crafted wind tunnel models created to test new designs
‘The [wind tunnel] models were absolute works of art. They were originally made of laminated mahogany but subsequently we progressed; they then became made of fibreglass, they [were] made out of a laminated mahogany model, then they made a mould, a fibreglass mould from that and then they made the model within the mould. And they were beautiful and the workshop consisted of people who had come from the tool room, they were expert woodworkers, pattern makers. They were all very skilled men and they used to make beautiful models for wind, a couple of thousandths of an inch of what was requested, they were very, very accurate, and looked very beautiful.’
